Inmate Improvements and Enhancements to Prison Living

Once you go into prison, life changes. It changes for you, it changes for your family, and it changes for your friends. The knowledge we provide of what is coming helps to blunt the trauma and stress, but some period of adjustment is necessary no matter what. Now is the time to prepare and lay a sound foundation for the little know enhancements and improvements to inmate living that are available if you know what they are and how to get them. But the foundation and groundwork must be laid now.

Your best day inside federal prison will not be as good as your worst day on the outside. But you will make it through, as uncomfortable as it may be, you will make it through. The primary punishment affecting inmates are not the conditions, the guards, or the hours. It is the separation from loved ones, family, and friends. Otherwise, your time in prison is disagreeable, but not unbearable, especially in a federal prison camp. It can be made even better by arranging beforehand to be qualified for the Inmate Improvements and Enhancements which the Bureau of Prisons has but does not talk about. You will never hear about these items from the BOP, but they do exist. You must know about them before you go in. There are not very many of them, but the few available can help improve your life in custody. If you know the system, like we at the Prison Consulting Group do, you can be prepared to take advantage of these improvements and enhancements and position yourself to get those “extras” in an environment overly Spartan. PCG informs and instructs clients to help them to achieve these Improvements and Enhancements. Each Improvement is a step up over the mediocre offerings the BOP issues to the standard inmate in federal prison. Each makes life a little more comfortable.

But the time to qualify for these Enhancements is not after you get to prison. Then it may be too late. The time for putting yourself in position for them is beforehand. You have to establish your reasons for these advantages before you get there. If you do not qualify for these in advance, it will be difficult or impossible to do so after arrival. The maneuvering starts well ahead of sentencing. It starts with the
Pre-Sentencing Investigation (PSI) interview and the succeeding Pre-Sentencing Investigation Report (PSR). These Improvements impart important, qualitative differences, but are little known or understood outside the system. You must set yourself up in advance for these.

Some of the Enhancements are food-related: Special meals, medically restricted diets, gluten-free foods, or common fare meals. Some of the Enhancements are apparel and bedding related: Better, softer shoes, a pass for a bottom bunk, better or more blankets, and extra pillows. Some Enhancements are religious, some social, some work-related. Qualification for the sentence reduction incentives of the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), for instance, is paramount. These advantages multiply in significance daily, used over many years.

If you wait until you report to prison to ask for these Enhancements, you are unlikely to receive them. Procedures dictate you have to set up the need for the Enhancement well in advance, positioning yourself before your judge rules on your sentence. PCG will jockey the defendant for these Enhancements and Improvements well enough in advance to ensure you are provided them. You can then make use of them your entire stay.
